How to Tell If You Need to Replace or Repair Your Windshield

A windshield is more than just a piece of glass. It’s one of the most crucial safety features of your car. If your windshield even has a minor crack or chip on it, the safety of the driver and the passenger are put at great risk. This is because they can obstruct the driver’s view of the road.

Most importantly, the windshield stops the driver or passenger from being ejected out of the car in case of a rollover or a head-on collision. This is why windshield cracks need to be taken seriously and immediately repaired or replaced, depending on the circumstances.

Here’s a brief guideline to help you decide when you should get your windshield replaced or repaired.

Repairs vs. replacements

The decision to either repair or replace your windshield depends on a variety of factors.

  1. The location of the crack:

You can only get a windshield repaired if the chip or crack is not in the line of the driver’s field of view. If it is and you repair it, the inconsistency of the structure will disrupt the driver’s vision. No matter how small the crack or chip is, repairing it will leave a mark which may make it hard for the driver to have a clear view of the road. In this case, replacing the entire windshield is the only option. On the other hand, if the crack is located in a place which doesn’t disrupt the driver’s vision, you can get it repaired.

  • Number of cracks:

The decision to replace the windshield also depends on the number of cracks. If the number exceeds 3, replacing is the best way forward. This is because a high number of cracks makes your windshield highly susceptible to further damage. Just another crack and your windshield could break without prior notice. On the flip side, if your windshield has one or two cracks here and there, repairs are ideal.

  • Other reasons:

At times, the law enforcement personnel can also fine you for not having your windscreen replaced. This is when the chip or the crack makes your windshield fall under the category of unsafe equipment. It’s not always legal to drive a car like that in some places.
