Fix Your Cracked Windshield

Chips and cracks to your windshield tend to happen fairly regularly during daily driving especially when travelling at higher speeds on the highway. We see this all the time in Alberta and British Columbia on highways such as Alberta Highway 2 that has large amounts of traffic moving at high speeds between Edmonton and Calgary.

Chips and cracks in your window may not seem like a big deal, but they impact your visibility and are a safety hazard.

If your windshield has a serious imperfection, it may be tempting to just ignore it or look around it to save time and money, but leaving the crack or chip and driving around with it is not an option.

The cracked glass may be compromised and the windshield is part of the safety system of the vehicle.

What should I do when my windshield is busted?

There are two main solutions to dealing with a broken windshield.

1) You can either get the crack filled if it’s small enough

2) Or you can replace the whole windshield

The latter is the more expensive option, while the former is for smaller imperfections. It’s like dealing with serious body damage or chipped paint, but your windshield is much more important in terms of your safety than your car’s paint is.

Location of the damage also plays an important role in determining your windshield's fate. Cracks at the edge of the windshield tend to spread very quickly and can compromise the structural integrity of the glass. If they're caught in time, they can be repaired. But in most cases, it's usually advisable to replace the windshield.

If the damage extends from the exterior pane of glass and penetrates the interior, it’s too deep to be repaired. Chips on corners or tight spots are often too difficult to repair too, so count those out. If a chip or crack has spread after the initial damage, that’s a clear sign the glass needs to be replaced.

What is the repair process for my windshield and where can I get it repaired?

A windshield repair can take up to half an hour or more and is performed by injecting a clear resin into it. After the resin is cured and hardened, the integrity of the glass will be restored along with the clean visual look of the windshield. This process will reduce the spread of cracks and damage to the windshield. Replacing the entire windshield takes a bit more work. After prepping the body of the car to prevent any damage, technicians will remove old damaged windshield from the vehicle. The seals and adhesives are also removed, and a primer is used on the bare frame, so a new glue and sealant can applied for the replacement windshield.

Once the new windshield is placed with precision onto the vehicle it will take up to another hour for the windshield to properly cure. All of the Calgary and Edmonton Crystal Glass locations also take care of windshield replacement if needed.
